Massage and ME: A Way to Unwind

NEWS IS IN MY FAMILY. My father was a journalist, and my two brothers worked in radio, so I grew up hanging around newsrooms.

In college, I majored in journalism, and then I became a TV news photographer. I loved it. I was covering the Special Olympics in 1984, filming on the toboggan run, when my foot went through the ice. I was holding 60 pounds of camera equipment, and I came down on my tail bone. I ended up needing surgery on my back. That was my first back surgery. My second was in 2004 when I fell again—I trip easily because I have weak ankles. Since then, I’ve lived with chronic back pain. Add to that the chronic migraines I’ve had since my 20s, and I needed to find something to help relieve both types of pain. That something was massage.

I started off getting a massage once a month, but since 2008, I’ve gotten a massage every Monday from my therapist James Roberts at Massage Envy – Old Town in Dallas. He’s wonderful! He does the best neck work I’ve ever had. I find I have fewer headaches as a result. Plus, it’s a great way to start the week. I’m so relaxed when it’s over. I usually get an hour long massage, but sometimes I’ll treat myself to an hour and a half. I wish I could do that every week, but I don’t always have time.

I’ve worked in the marketing and public relations department at Baylor Health Care System for the last 23 years. Working in healthcare, I’m more aware that I need to take care of myself. We support complementary therapies to traditional medicine at our hospitals, and we encourage massage therapy for our patients and employees.

I think of massage as my weekly tuneup. It gets rid of that stiffness I feel in my neck, shoulders and back. If I miss a week, I can tell. Massage has had a long-term effect on my pain. If I didn’t have weekly massages, I’d be like a stiff board walking around.
